What is Mindfulness ?

Jon Kabat-Zinn, (American professor emeritus of medicine and the creator of the Stress Reduction Clinic and the Centre for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School) a pioneer of Mindfulness Based Interventions, describes Mindfulness as ‘an awareness that emerges through paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally to the unfolding of experience, moment by moment’.

I was new to Mindfulness when I asked to join the 8 week MBSR course back in September 2018. It had been recommended by a friend who, having had life changing health problems, said Mindfulness had “saved her life.” Before I started the course I read some material by Jon Kabat Zinn (Professor of Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and the man responsible for bringing Eastern Meditation Practices to the West in the 1970s) and was sceptical of the claim that practicing Mindfulness could lead to significant impacts on both your physical and mental health; I had usually been pretty scathing about any ‘alternative therapies’. However, on joining the course, my initial scepticism soon melted away. Our group teacher, Nelum, delivered the course with an enormous sense of openness, calm and serenity. The atmosphere of the centre, where the classes were held, was welcoming and warm and had a real energy about it. I threw myself into the course and, within a matter of weeks, could feel the benefits. It is difficult to describe the changes that you experience and I think you have to experience it for yourself to understand the impact it can have; and, of course, you have to do the homework. So much did we enjoy the course that our group asked Nelum if we could extend the course for another 5 weeks; and she obliged. I have kept up my practice since then both at home and at the day retreats held every month and the extra Friday night classes. I have made great friends that I know will be my friends for life. The result; I am a much calmer and hopefully more thoughtful person. I can manage difficult situations in a more grounded way and can manage my health problems much better, greatly reducing their impact on my day to day life. I would encourage anyone and everyone to take a Mindfulness course.

I was drawn to Mindfulness at the end of 2018 and went on to complete the 8 week MBSR course at the beginning of 2019. I cannot speak highly enough of the course teacher, Nel, and her gentle, compassionate, professional and friendly approach to the teaching of the course. We were a small group and this allowed us to develop a greater understanding of each other, in safe and relaxed surroundings. I would strongly recommend attending the MBSR course under Nel’s leadership, to anyone who is interested in living a calmer, more joyous and ultimately less stressful life on a day-to-day basis. This was just the start of my mindfulness journey!

The Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction course is one of the best investments I've made and has provided me tools for life. I like the balance between content and teaching style with lots of practice involved, which I haven't seen on other mindfulness courses which are mainly theory based. It's good to have small classes so we can have deeper discussions.

Mindfulness has helped support me through a testing period of rebalancing my mental health and well-being. Along with regular counselling, a period of medication, and a renewed focus on my own physical health (simply eating well and exercising), I have learned what a fabulous life-long skill mindfulness is. Now, I feel well, enjoy my work and my family and continue to practice at Glasgow mindfulness centre. Nelum has guided me through the MBSR course and through the Advanced Mindfulness course as well as several bespoke practise sessions. She has taken time to get to know my personal journey and has taught me this fabulous skill of self-care in a patient and caring way.

Advanced Mindfulness is a great stepping stone to take your mindfulness to the next level. With already having the basics from the MBSR course, I found Advanced Mindfulness enhanced my practice that bit further and it is nice to get to know the regulars. Nel is such a fantastic teacher, and provides lots of kindness and understanding.

Shortly after completing the 8 week MBSR course I attended the 4 week Advanced Mindfulness Course, again under Nel’s expert tuition and leadership. I was eager to enhance the experience I had during the 8 week course, and was not disappointed! We had many in-depth group discussions and developed a greater understanding of the techniques we could take forward into our everyday lives to enable us to cope, in a more positive way, with life’s many challenges. In addition to my regular daily practice, I continue to attend monthly Mindfulness Practice Group sessions at the Centre.

I really enjoyed studying with Nelum at Glasgow Mindfulness Centre on the eight-week MBSR course and also the excellent Advanced Mindfulness classes. Nel is such a cheerful, encouraging and supportive person with a wealth of experience of Mindfulness and Buddhist practice. I am very grateful for her kindness, sharing these important and wonderful teachings, taking the extra time to answer all my questions and giving me practical advice. As a practitioner with experience of several forms of meditation, I heartily recommend Nel as a skilful and compassionate teacher.
